PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
Program description
The MPhil in Pharmacognosy program is a research-based program that trains students in the scientific study of medicinal plants and natural products. It focuses on phytochemistry, quality control of herbal medicines, ethnobotany, and biological evaluation of natural products.
Students gain practical skills in the isolation, characterization, and standardization of bioactive compounds, preparing them for roles in academia, industry, herbal medicine enterprises, and regulatory agencies. The programme also provides a strong foundation for doctoral studies in pharmacognosy and related fields.
Program Objectives
The objectives of the program are to:
i. Train students to develop critical thinking and analytical skills in natural products research through teaching, experimentation, and independent research.
ii. Equip students with the capacity to design and conduct applied research in Pharmacognosy and related fields.
iii. Build a strong foundation for graduates to pursue doctoral studies (PhD) in Pharmacognosy and related disciplines for careers in health services, industry, and academia.
iv. Promote innovation in the development, quality control, and utilization of medicinal plants and herbal medicines for improved healthcare delivery
Admission Requirement
Applicants to the MPhil Pharmacognosy program must hold a B.Pharm, PharmD, or a first degree in relevant sciences such as Botany, Herbal Medicine, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Agriculture, or Biological Science from a recognized university. In addition, candidates whose first language is not English are required to present a certificate of proficiency in English. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview as part of the admission process before an offer is made.
Duration of Program
Two years
Program Structure
(30 to 50 words)
The structure of the MPhil Pharmacognosy program comprises coursework in the first year, followed by research and project work in the second year, culminating in the preparation and submission of a thesis.
Research
The Department currently engages in research in the areas of phytochemistry, quality control of herbal medicines, ethnobotany and biological activities of potential medicinal plants. Postgraduate students play an integral role in these research efforts, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to discoveries.
The Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine welcomes meaningful collaborations with academia, research centres, and industry to advance innovation and evidence-based research in medicinal plants and herbal medicines.
