The University of Ghana School of Pharmacy (UGSOP) has strengthened its international research profile following a visit by a delegation from Ulster University, Northern Ireland, to the Legon campus. The visit forms part of a growing collaboration between the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) and Ulster University, supported by the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), which seeks to advance sustainable community pharmacy practice across both institutions’ networks.
Central to the campus engagement was a faculty seminar chaired by the Dean of the School, Professor Irene Kretchy. Academic staff from across UGSOP’s departments engaged the Ulster delegation in substantive discussions on shared research interests, including pharmaceutical waste management, safe medicines disposal, environmental stewardship, and the integration of sustainability principles into pharmacy education and professional practice. The seminar drew on the School’s interdisciplinary strength across pharmacognosy and herbal medicine, clinical and social pharmacy, pharmaceutics, and medicinal chemistry, demonstrating the breadth of academic expertise UGSOP brings to the partnership.
The visit also opened discussions on joint postgraduate supervision, student and staff exchange, and collaborative grant applications, including potential proposals to the British Council’s ISPF Phase 4 and the Wellcome Trust’s African Institutions Initiative. UGSOP’s role as the principal academic partner on the Ghanaian side of the collaboration positions the School to co-lead and shape the research agenda alongside its Ulster counterparts. The engagement reaffirms UGSOP’s commitment to equitable international partnerships that harness the School’s academic expertise and local health system knowledge to advance pharmacy practice that serves both people and planet.
