The School of Pharmacy, which at inception, was temporarily located at the Korle-Bu campus of the College of Health Sciences. In 2011, UGSOP relocated to Legon where it occupies the premises formerly occupied by the Biochemistry Department. Though still inadequate, the relocation was a good improvement on facilities for the School.
The School of Pharmacy has equipped laboratories for General Pharmaceutics, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology as well as Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine for students’ practical courses. It also has a laboratory for Faculty Research. The school has arrangements with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital among others for Clinical rotation for students. It has special arrangements with a number of community pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies, which offer their facilities for the training of students in community and industrial pharmacy, respectively.
The School of Pharmacy has collaborations with local and international institutions such as the Ghana Atomic Energy, the Food and Drugs Authority, the Geological Survey Department, the School of Pharmacy, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. Howard University School of pharmacy, Washington, USA among others.
Within the foreseeable future, the School hopes to relocate again, this time to its permanent location at the ‘Medical Village’ of the University of Ghana, where the whole College of Health Sciences will be located. Till then, expansion works are underway to add on larger laboratories and offices to enhance teaching and learning.
